There are thousand of recipes for smoothies, but I just never felt one hit the spot with getting the aspect of immunity boosting, energy raising, metabolic balance and general yumminess all in one! So this morning – I started off with pulling together my everyday larder ingredients that could contribute to creating a smoothie that really fuelled me up, but most importantly kept my energy levels up till lunch and fought off the sniffling colds and coughs that seem to favour this time of year. I have two new secret star ingredients – so please check this recipe out!!
Two of my star ingredients – and possibly very new to some traditional recipes is turmeric and sesame seeds. I use turmeric a lot in a special ayurvedic tea that I make regularly for my family when they are running fevers and two cups of that have them back to their happy state, so I thought, why not introduce it into a smoothie. Also, I was astonished to discover the calcium level in sesame seeds – so because of that, I can actually sacrifice milk in this smoothie ( thank you in advance to those with dairy intolerances!) and the mix works fantastically with a few tablespoons of coconut cream to bring that smoothie to life. Did you know that whole sesame seeds contain about 88 mg of calcium per tablespoon of seeds. Just a quarter cup of natural sesame seeds provides more calcium than a whole cup of milk. A quarter cup of raw natural sesame seeds has 351 mg of calcium while one cup of non-fat milk has 316.3 mg, and one cup of whole milk has only 291 mg of calcium. Plus, they are alkaline whereas milk is acidic.
Please do give this a try and let me know what you think! Of course – this is perfectly suitable for kids – so try and entice them with this before their busy school day kicks off.
